Has excessive individualism created the pandemic?
The title can perhaps upset some people. But I am asking myself and I am asking you, why and how did we get into this situation? A situation where most of the world has been hit really hard by a pandemic. We have been forced to a confinement. It has been one month here in Philadelphia, PA where I live. I have lost my job and like other twenty millions of Americans (and more counting every day) I had to filed for unemployment. I would have never thought that I'd had to do this. But yet..
Were our way of life working in our favor? Were we prepared for this? How are we coping with this? And what can we learn from this? Will life will be the same when we are out of confinement? Certainly not. Normal was not working that's why we won't be back to "normal" life, as many like to use that term.
Today in the face of the pandemic, we realize how people health, how our health is the most important thing right now. We are extremely grateful for doctors, nurses, medical workers, grocery workers, clerks who are there still working for us. We need them the most.
We are valuing even more people than anything else.
But then what happens? What were we doing before Covid-19 hit us hard?
We are moving everywhere, constantly moving, polluting and harming the environment around us, travelling, consuming, over consuming, anything to satisfying our wants, polluting because we were selfish.
I've worked in the restaurant business for many many years, certainly too long, and I am shocked at how much food customers are wasting. It really disgusts me beyond anything else. My heart breaks every time had to throw away beautifully prepared delicious food. The amount of waste I have seen throughout the years at restaurants is unbelievable. I don't understand how people can do this, how disconnected from nature and from how much work is put into growing, raising, harvesting, transporting, delivering and making the food people are...
The over consumption of meat and the mistreatment of animals may have led to the spread of the Coronavirus from animals to humans. As a vegetarian of 13 years, I truly believe that we should treat animals with respect and care. The way animals are treated in wet markets are revolting. As a result diseases will eventually being transferred to humans.
Economy has been more important than people. Of course money is important, make a living is important but life is the most important. People first, then money! Without people there is no economy right? Doesn't it make sense? Our excessive individualism led us to critical and catastrophic sanitary and economical situation.
When we are able to control the spread of Covid-19, find medicine and get back to our social lives, will we treasure and protect more simple thing, people, our health, nature, animals, rather our excessive individualistic consumption?
What do you think about it?
What will we learn from Covid-19?
Will we truly change for the good of humanity or is it too late anyway? Will we get back to our normal selfish ego-centered self?
Please feel free to share your thoughts!
